I love that a giant burst of super-ripe, red-hot, serrano chili is the first, and very lasting, whiff I get in our 2021 Carmenere. It’s that fruity spice that first attracted me to Washington Carmenere, but completely magnified. There was a second rich-fruity-floral note I struggled to pick up & finally, after some major assistance from a long-time Matchless Member, I realized is sorrel! I had sorrel for the first time just earlier this year in the jungle of Belize, and while every Caribbean country has slightly different takes on this holiday drink, the main components are tea steeped from hibiscus blossom and fresh ginger.

Once your nose gobbles up all the red fruits and chocolate, out comes a layer of espresso, wet graphite, bay leaves, spicy brown mustard and roasting chilis. There is just a ton going on here before you even take a sip.

This is our second ever vintage of Backdraft, a Reserve label we save for only the most special of circumstances, always donating a portion of the proceeds to First Responders. The 2018 vintage is just as smooth and supple as any wine we’ve made. Hitting you in the nose with all sorts of rich aromas – the floor of the redwood forest, fresh tobacco, a pinch of black pepper, Anaheim chili pepper, and Sicilian cured black olives. There’s a red berry in there too, something between rasp & straw.

The fruit fully comes out once you taste this wine, starting with blueberry & plum. The richness of the nose is echoed with bramble, dark chocolate, a touch of baking spices, and more blueberry.

The 2020 vintage leans towards rose petal, strawberry, and wet granite. The second layer only takes another few minutes to appear, and suddenly there is coffee bean, chocolate, Old Bay seasoning, blackberry, and dried apricot.

There is even more fruit in the mouth starting with blueberry and cranberry, leading to tons of fresh-cracked black pepper, star anise, cardamom, and graphite.
